SMALL GROUP Y11 TRANSITION TO A-LEVEL COURSE

Everyone knows that the jump from GCSE to A-Level is a significant one, and this is particularly true for Physics. Not only does the subject content become more challenging, but you are now expected to work independently, and have a significant amount of prior what I call “Physics General Knowledge”. These are the things that it is just assumed you know and the things that help you to think like a physicist, and be a better physicist. You will find that exam questions are no longer isolated to individual topics, but that instead they will draw on many aspects of your A level course, plus a wealth of practical, mathematical, and data analysis skills.

My small group, summer headstart courses have been designed to make the transition to A -level a more manageable one. This course is designed to be academically rigorous and is aimed at students who are looking at achieving at least a grade 7 in both GCSE Physics (or Combined Science) AND GCSE Maths.

"Skills for A-level Physics".

This course includes 6 sessions covering the fundamental skills needed to succeed at A-level Each session will focus on a particular skill area which is integral to students' understanding and ability to work through problems, for all A-level specifications. It will provide students with a headstart in using these skills so that once they begin their A-level course, they are confident in applying them to a variety of contexts.

"Knowledge for A-level Physics".

This 6 session course will help to address the key GCSE knowledge which is required, and should ideally be understood, by all A-level physics students. Each session will focus on one of the "Big Ideas" within physics and provide students with the opportunity to revisit, practice and develop their understanding of these fundamental, and essential, ideas so that they are able to begin these topics at A-level with a solid grounding ready for the development of these ideas that A-level brings.

Each course can be booked on a session by session basis for £30 per session,

or £150 for the full course if booked in one go.

A session workbook containing tasks, notes and practise questions.
Weekly homework pack which will either be completed and marked online or self assessed. At this level, and if students want to get the best out of the course, this forms a vital part of the sessions.
